I recently started a bi-weekly column over at Bit Creature, called Dissonant Reviews, in which I take closer look at how particular games are reviewing and what that says about not only the state of the medium but also the state of games criticism. I wanted to start writing this column because I have noticed some unfortunate trends in game reviews: they often all say the same basic things, they are often really vague about their criticisms, they are often inflated in their scores , and they tend to be overly effusive in their praise (many game reviews sound like commercials rather than balanced criticism).

Thus, I wrote about the reviews of Papo y Yo, Sleeping Dogs, and Torchlight II, highlighting some obvious things that I felt like many of the reviews of those games were missing. Given that this column zeroes in on where game criticism falls short, you might think I am a bit of a grumpy games journalist–that may be true, but the truth is that in preparing each of these columns, I came across a number of fantastic reviews and much thoughtful criticism that time and space kept me from sharing.

Thus, in an effort to prove that there are a lot of great game reviews out there and also to show that I am not a complete grump, I thought I would share with you some of the excellent criticism I am coming across as I scour the game reviews I read each week.
